Create and manage defects
A defect records a failure during a test run so your team can track it until it's fixed. Use the Defects tab to create, view, and edit defects in qTest Manager's internal tracker.
Here's how you can create defects in the internal tracker:
-
Create a defect from scratch on the Defects tab
-
Import defects from a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet
-
Submit or link a defect while you run a test to attach it to the test log or to a specific test step
If your project uses Jira, Rally, or VersionOne to track defects, See Use an external defect tracker.
Before you start
Make sure your user profile includes the permissions you need to manage defects:
-
Create Defects: Create, import, and submit defects.
-
Edit Defects: Change existing defects.
-
View Defects: Open and review defects.
Create a stand-alone defect
You can create a defect outside of a test run. These defects are not automatically linked to any test runs until you link the defect from Test execution. Any test runs you link in Test execution display in the read-only Linked Test Runs section on the Defects tab.
To create a stand-alone defect, follow these steps:
-
In the Defects tab, select New Defect from the toolbar.
-
Add any information you want to include in the Details section. You must enter a Summary and Description.
-
Optionally, add any attachments that help clarify the defect.
-
Save your defect.
-
Refresh the page after you save a new defect to view the Comment field, where you can add comments at any point in the defect's lifecycle.
Clone a defect
You can clone a defect to copy most of its details to a new defect. To clone a defect, open the defect you want to make a copy of and select Clone.
The cloned defect automatically receives the StatusNew. Linked test runs, attachments, comments, and history from the original defect do not carry over to the cloned defect.
Review defects in Test Execution
Find defects that are linked to tests in Test Execution. This also lets you review linked defects when the Defects tab is hidden.
On a test run, use these views:
-
Select the defect icon on the Execution History grid to see defects for one test log.
-
Open the Defects tab for a list of all defects linked to any test log of that test run. Select the gear icon to show or hide defect field columns.
On a test suite, test cycle, or release, use these views:
-
Select the defect icon on the test run grid to see defects for one test run.
-
Open the Defect Summary tab for a list of all defects linked to associated test runs. Select the gear icon to show or hide defect field columns.
For charts and filters across many defects, use qTest Insights.
Use an external defect tracker
If your project integrates with Jira, Rally, or VersionOne for defects, your defects live in the external tool. That means qTest hides the Defects tab.
You can still submit and link defects from Test Execution. You can also still review the defects attached to an individual test run, on that test runs Defects tab and on the Defect Summary tab.
To work with a defect integration, see one of the following topics:
What's next
To c, see Field Settings. To control user workflow for defect statuses, see Defect Workflow Settings.
After you have defects, here's what you can do next:
-
Create test runs from linked defects to retest after a fix
-
Customize or add new defect fields or required values
-
Set defect workflow rules so only the right users can change certain statuses
-
Route a defect for Vera approval if your project uses Vera
