Version and approve test cases
Test cases change over the course of testing. qTest tracks those changes with versions and with statuses in the Test Case Properties section of the test case.
When a test case is ready for testing, you can approve that version of the test case in Test design for your testers to start running tests in Test execution.
Before you start
Make sure you are assigned permissions to Approve Test Cases.
How versioning works
Every test case has a read-only Version field in Test Case Properties that starts at 0.1. When you save changes to a test case, the version increases by 0.1. When you approve a test case that's ready to run, the version increases to the next whole number. For example, when you approve version 4.2, the version becomes 5.0.
If you used a test case as a called test case, approving a version of a test case also updates any locations it was called in.
Manage changes when your software changes
A new version of your software may require changes to a test. To manage that over time, you can:
-
Edit the original test case, such as adding test steps
A separate test case is useful if you still need to test previous versions of your software.
If you don't need to keep testing older software versions, you should edit the existing test case over time to maintain version control. You can only edit the latest version of a test case, but you can still review earlier changes on the test case's History tab.
Approve test cases
Approval controls which version of a test case can be used in Test execution. An approved test case means that version is ready to run.
When you run a test, you can select any previously approved version of the test case. If you have the Approve Test Cases permission, you can also execute the latest version during the run.
Here's how you can approve test cases before running tests:
-
To approve one test case, select Approve on the test case page and confirm your choice.
-
To approve several test cases, select
Data Query from the tree panel toolbar. Filter and select the test cases you want to approve, then select Batch Approve.
What's next
After a version is approved, create test runs and execute them.
