Share test cases with another project
Sharing a test case lets you reuse your tests across projects, giving you a single source of truth. For example, a shared test case can be maintained in one project and used to create test runs as many separate projects as you'd like. The test case displays in all projects, but you only need to update it in the source project.
Sharing is less maintenance than copying a test case. A copy is a separate test case, so you have to maintain each copy. Share when you want to maintain one source of truth across projects.
Activate test case sharing
Before you can share a test case, you need to activate the functionality in the project that contains the test case. To turn on test case sharing, follow these steps:
-
Open the project that contains the test cases you want to share.
-
Go to Settings > Test Case Settings, and then perform the following actions:
-
Turn on Activation Status.
-
Select Enable users to use Test Cases from other projects.
-
Select Share this project's Test Cases with other projects.
-
In the Projects field, select the checkboxes in the Shared column for each project you want to share test cases with.
-
-
Select Save, and then refresh the project.
Share test cases and modules
After you activate sharing, you can share individual test cases or entire modules.
Important considerations
Keep these behaviors in mind:
-
When you share a module, qTest also shares its sub-modules. If you have the Edit Test Cases permission, qTest also shares the test cases under that module.
-
When you create a new test case or sub-module under a shared test case, it's shared by default. You can clear the Shared checkbox to stop sharing it.
-
When you copy or move modules or test cases into a shared module, you can confirm whether to share the copied or moved item.
Share assets
To share, follow these steps:
-
Go to the test case or module you want to share.
-
In Test Case Properties, select the Shared checkbox.
-
In Projects Shared to, select the project or projects to share with.
-
Select Save.
Create test runs from a shared test case
After you share a test case, users in the other project can create test runs from these test cases. Before users can create test runs from a shared test case, you must approve the test case at least once in the original project.
Use shared test cases in the TestPad
You can run a shared test case or test run manually in the TestPad.
However, there are a few things you can't do:
-
Automate a shared test case or test run
-
Run shared test cases or test runs through the API. That means you can't use thsem with Launch or Automation Host.
-
Edit a test run created from a shared test case in the TestPad.
Unshare test cases
When you unshare a test case, any associated test runs in other projects become read-only.
When you unshare a module, you can choose to automatically unshare its sub-modules and test cases. If you don't have the Edit Test Cases permission, the test cases stay shared.
What's next
Use the shared test cases to create test runs in another project.
