Cloud Scanner vs. Tosca XScan

Tosca Cloud offers different approaches to creating web tests:

  • Create tests with Tosca XScan, our all-purpose solution for any degree of complexity in your application or tests. It's a powerful tool to create a low-maintenance, end-to-end test suite.

  • Create tests with Cloud Scanner, our zero-footprint and zero-maintenance solution for simple, one-off web tests. It's an easy, intuitive tool to get familiar with Tosca Cloud's most important tasks and concepts.

This table gives you detailed information on the most important differences between the two approaches:

Do I need anything special installed?

No. Cloud Scanner is zero-footprint.

Yes. You need local components to scan your application and to run tests.

What kind of tests can I create?

Web tests.

All supported types of tests.

What's the main difference in my workflow?

You scan your application and create your test at the same time, in split-screen mode.

Scanning and creating tests are separate tasks: you scan first and then build your test case.

Do I get reusable modules?

Yes. Cloud Scanner creates modules in the background. You have limited influence on, for example, the size of the module or its exact content.

Yes. You have full control over which modules you create for which areas of your screen, what size they are, and what's in them.

How does Tosca Cloud identify my controls?

By technical properties only. You can't make any changes to the properties Tosca Cloud chooses.

By default, Tosca Cloud uses technical properties. If the properties that Tosca Cloud chooses don't work for you, you can define your own combination or choose other identification methods.

Can I try out my test case?

Yes. You can do trial runs in a Tricentis-hosted environment.

The results are only visible to you. Tosca Cloud visualizes them in the test case itself.

Yes. You can do trial runs on your local machine.

The results are only visible to you. Tosca Cloud visualizes them in the test case itself. Additionally, Tosca Cloud generates a test run entry with detailed logs for each trial run, which is available for 7 days.

How do I run multiple test cases?

In a playlist.

Typically, you'll run your tests on cloud agents, to keep a zero-footprint environment.

Please note that cloud agents are a beta feature.

In a playlist.

You can choose to use cloud agents or team agents, which you maintain within your own environment.

Strictly speaking, it's not always an either/or decision, because Cloud Scanner is zero-footprint. You can prepare your environment for Tosca XScan and then use Cloud Scanner if it's the best option for you at the moment.
