Convert manual test cases to automated

Convert an existing manual test case to an automated test case so that automation results can map back to that test case and its test runs.

You can convert a single test case from the test case page, or convert several test cases from the tree panel.

Before you start

Complete these setup steps before you convert test cases:

  • Install and register the Automation Host, and confirm that it is online.

  • Turn on Automation Integration in the project's Automation Settings. Automation Integration connects the Automation Host to automated test cases in qTest.

  • Complete Automation Execution Mapping in Automation Settings.

Convert a single test case

To convert one test case, follow these steps:

  1. In Test Design, open the test case you want to convert.

  2. Select Convert.

qTest converts the test case to an automated test case.

  3. In the Automation Content field, enter the identifier that points automation results to a test run linked to this test case, such as a test class or test method.

The value in Automation Content must be unique. When you add a test log to an existing test run, the Automation Content must match that identifier.

Convert multiple test cases

To convert several test cases at once, follow these steps:

  1. In the Test Design tree panel, select the test cases you want to convert.

  2. Right-click a selected test case, and then select Convert.

    The Batch Convert window opens.

  3. In the Convert To field, select Automation.

  4. Optionally, select Send out notification emails to email users associated with the selected test cases.

  5. Select Confirm.

The Update Progress window shows the conversion status.

  6. When conversion finishes, select OK to close the window, or select Input Automation Contents to enter Automation Content for the converted test cases.

If you skip this window, you can still enter Automation Content on each test case page.

  7. If you opened Input Automation Contents, enter a unique identifier in the Automation Content field for each test case, and then select Confirm.

The value in Automation Content must be unique so that automation results map to the correct test run and test log.

What's next

After you convert test cases, schedule and run test automation so results post back to qTest.
